The common household straw can be used to make beautiful Hanukkah decorations. Straws can be used to make both ornaments and homemade paper dreidels. These make great crafts for children to participate in during a Hanukkah party.
The Star of David is a popular focal point during Hanukkah. Use blue and white straws to make Star of David ornaments. Find a Star of David template, and have the children glue together the straws to match the template. Use a piece of string or ribbon to turn these into great Hanukkah ornaments. Allow the children to use their creativity to make different variations of this popular Hanukkah decoration.
A dreidel is a popular Hanukkah top game for kids, and you can make one using a straw. All you need to make this craft is: a printer, some tape (or glue stick), and a straw. There are many dreidel templates available online. Print off enough black and white copies for each child at the party. Allow the children to color and decorate their own dreidel. They can use a wide variety of colors, or the popular colors of Hanukkah can be laid out. Have the children cut out their dreidel after they are finished decorating it. Fold in the eight tabs, and tape the dreidel together. You can also use a glue stick instead of tape to glue the ends together. Poke a hole in the top of the dreidel with a pair of scissors. Insert the straw and tape it to make it secure. Once their dreidel is completed the children can begin playing.
It is truly amazing how a common straw can turn into two fun activities for children to do during Hanukkah. Try adding these two crafts to your next Hanukkah party, and enjoy watching the children show off their creativity.
