Add a piñata to your next Hanukkah party for a fun twist. Children really enjoy breaking open the piñata and getting all of the goodies that are hidden inside. Piñatas don’t have to only be popular for birthday parties and Mexican parties. Piñatas can be purchased already made, or they can be made from home.
Blue and white Hanukkah star piñatas can easily be found at local party stores, or through online merchants. Blue and white are the traditional colors of Hanukkah. The Star of David is also one of the main focal points of Hanukkah. Once a premade piñata is purchased small novelty toys and candy can be placed inside.
Making a piñata at home is a great way to come up with a creative Hanukkah game that will get the children involved. A homemade piñata only requires a few supplies which include: newspapers, water, flour, balloons, streamers, and some Styrofoam cones. Cut your newspaper into 1 inch wide strips. Blow up the balloon and tie a knot in the end. You want to make sure that the balloon is as big as it will go without popping. Mix flour and water until you get a paste. Lay the balloon on the table with the cones laid around the balloon to form a star. Dip the newspaper strips in the paste and lay them across the balloon and cones. Make sure the newspapers cover the balloon and cones in one piece. This will ensure that the cones stay on the balloon. Continue to wrap the balloon and cones until you can’t see them anymore. Allow to fully dry. Turn the balloon and cones over, and repeat these steps on the other side. It may take 3 or 4 times before you noticed that your star is hard with a thick layer of newspaper. Make sure that you leave the bottom of the balloon where the knot is uncovered. You want to be able to pick it up by a cone and nothing falls apart. Once it is completely harden, pop the balloon. Fill with candy and miniature toys. Fill the bottom with the newspaper mixture. Once the piñata is sturdy and hard let the children paint and decorate the star with paint and streams. Hang from a wall where the children will be able to use a stick to hit the piñata.
Piñatas can quickly become a new Hanukkah tradition. After watching the children enjoy themselves while breaking open the piñata and getting the candy, you will realize that piñatas are not just for birthday parties anymore.
