Candles are a very popular item for Hanukkah. The whole holiday revolves around candles. A menorah is the most important element of the holiday. It is important to understand the menorah, and what it symbolizes.
A Hanukkah menorah has is a candelabrum that holds nine candles. The candle in the middle sits higher than the other eight. This candle is called the shamash. This candle is used to light the other eight candles during the eight days of Hanukkah. The shamash candle sits up higher on the menorah, and it has four candles on each side. On the first night of Hanukkah the first candle is lit with the shamash. Each night another candle is lit until all eight candles have been lit with the shamash. There is a story behind the reasoning of why a menorah has eight candles that need to be lit.
The Hanukkah tradition of lighting eight candles on a menorah started after the Jewish people had a successful revolt against the Seleucid monarchy. The Jewish people found some pure ritual oil. They thought that it would only light a menorah for one night. They felt that it was a miracle that the small supply was enough to light candles for eight nights before more oil could be found. The eight branches on the menorah celebrate the fact that the oil lasted for that many nights.
When people hear the word Hanukkah they automatically think about candles and the menorah. However, it is important to know about the menorah and how it came to be.
